| Approximately
10-15 years after the pre-commercial thinning, the
first commercial thinning should be done for the exact
same reasons as the pre-commercial thinning. At that
time, the trees are taller and much bigger in diameter
and may have now attained some value. As time passes,
additional thinnings are conducted. As the trees grow
in diameter, their value increases. |

After
the pre-commercial thinning, other species of trees,
both coniferous and deciduous (hardwoods), will start
to grow. They have not grown before because of the
lack of light. As the plantation is further thinned,
these new trees will continue to naturally regenerate
and will eventually take over from the original stand,
thus completing the cycle. |
